Discord Verification: Every Method Explained
Button, captcha, voice, and Secure browser verification compared — what each one actually stops, and how to choose between them.
Quick answer
Discord verification gates a role behind a check so a new member has to prove they're a real, present person before they can talk. Airwavy offers four modes — Button (lightest), Captcha (blocks simple bots), Voice (proves someone's actually there), and Secure, a Premium browser flow that verifies the signed-in Discord account and active session — and you can match the mode to how much friction your community actually needs.
What you'll learn
- What each of the four verification modes actually checks
- Why a stricter mode isn't always the right default
- How failed attempts and staff review work
- How to set up verification without locking out real members
- Common mistakes that make verification annoying instead of protective
Why servers gate new members at all
An open server — anyone joins, anyone talks immediately — is easy for a raid, a scam bot, or a low-effort alt account to exploit. Verification adds one deliberate step between joining and participating, which is enough to stop most automated abuse without meaningfully slowing down a real person.
The hard part isn't deciding to add a gate — it's picking a gate that's actually proportional to your risk. A tiny hobby server and a large public community are solving different problems with the same feature.
What Discord's own verification level offers
Discord has a built-in server verification level (from none up to highest) that requires an account to be registered on Discord, or a verified email/phone, for a minimum amount of time before it can send messages. It's a real, zero-setup baseline — but it's static and the same for every member, with no role granted, no staff review step, and no way to tune it per-community beyond picking one of Discord's five preset levels.
Airwavy's four verification modes
Every mode does the same job — grant a configured role after a check — but the check itself is very different.
Button — lightest friction
A single interaction in the verification channel. Stops nothing sophisticated, but filters out members who never intended to actually join in (and is often paired with a stricter mode for extra confidence).
Captcha — blocks simple bots
Easy, normal, or hard challenges, with optional line interference and math challenges, plus a configurable attempt limit. Free servers get the standard experience; advanced controls are Premium.
Voice — proves someone's actually there
Grants the configured role after a member joins a selected verification voice channel, with optional private confirmation and logging. Effective against anything that can't join voice, which rules out most automation.
Secure — Premium browser flow
Verifies the signed-in Discord account and active session through a Premium browser flow before granting roles — the strictest of the four, aimed at communities that have been specifically targeted by alt-account abuse.
Set it up without locking out real members
- Create the verified-member role and place it below Airwavy's role in Server Settings → Roles.
- Prepare a verification channel and, if you want one, a private verification-log channel.
- Open Verification in the dashboard, choose a mode, the verified role(s), the verification channel, and staff roles.
- If using Captcha, set the attempt limit and difficulty; on Premium, decide the automatic outcome after the final failed attempt (kick, ban, or leave for staff review).
- Save, then test the full flow with a non-staff account that doesn't already hold the role before rolling it out.
Common mistakes
- Reaching straight for the strictest mode — Secure verification is real friction; most servers get most of the benefit from Captcha or Voice.
- Not testing with a genuinely fresh, non-staff account — an admin account skips exactly the checks you're trying to validate.
- Placing the verified role above Airwavy's own role, so grants silently fail.
- Leaving the attempt limit at a default that's too tight for a slow typer, or too loose to matter.
Troubleshooting
Verification succeeds but no role is granted
Place Airwavy's role above the verified role and grant Manage Roles — Discord prevents a bot from granting a role above its own.
A member is stuck after reaching the attempt limit
Reaching the captcha attempt limit blocks another attempt for 24 hours. On Premium, a private verification log can give staff a guarded action to unblock the member, keep the block, kick, or ban.
I want automatic action on repeated failures
That's a Premium option — choose an automatic kick or ban after the final failed attempt. Without it, the member stays blocked for staff review.
