Discord Server Security Checklist
A practical checklist covering owner-account security, role hierarchy, verification, anti-raid, and anti-nuke — the gaps most servers miss.

Why 'we have a moderation bot' isn't the same as 'we're secure'
A bot with good moderation tools only closes the gaps you've actually configured it to close. The most common real-world compromises — a phished owner account, an over-privileged bot integration, a staff role handed out too liberally — happen at layers no amount of automated moderation reaches on its own.
What Discord gives you to work with
Discord provides account-level security (2FA, trusted devices), a server verification level, and role permissions with hierarchy enforcement. These are real, necessary controls — but they're baseline defaults, not a configured security posture, and nothing forces a server owner to actually use them.
The four layers, and what covers each one
Work through these roughly in order — later layers assume the earlier ones are already solid.
1. The owner's own account
This is the one gap automation can't close. Enable 2FA on the Discord account itself and use trusted devices — a compromised owner account can bypass every other protection below.
2. Role hierarchy and permission discipline
Keep owner and privileged staff roles above Airwavy. Grant feature-specific permissions instead of broad ones without review, and restrict log, moderation, verification, backup, and support channels to the intended staff.
3. Member-facing protection
Verification gates new members behind a check appropriate to your risk level. Anti-Raid watches join velocity; Anti-Scam watches for scam patterns continuously. Anti-Nuke (configured alongside Anti-Raid) watches for one compromised actor already inside the server making rapid destructive changes.
4. Incident response
A private moderation-log channel, a documented staff escalation path, and Anti-Nuke's owner-only exemption controls mean that when something does go wrong, staff can actually investigate and respond instead of reconstructing events from memory.
Work through it in this order
- Turn on 2FA on the server owner's Discord account today — this takes minutes and closes the biggest single gap.
- Review your role list: confirm owner/admin roles sit above Airwavy, and that no permission is granted more broadly than a feature actually needs.
- Set up Verification appropriate to your community size and risk (see the dedicated verification guide).
- Enable Anti-Raid and Anti-Nuke, starting with alert-only or quarantine responses while you validate normal traffic.
- Set up a private moderation-log channel and confirm staff know the escalation path for a real incident.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a moderation bot is a substitute for owner-account 2FA — it isn't, and can't be.
- Granting a role Administrator when it only needs one or two specific permissions.
- Setting Anti-Raid or Anti-Nuke straight to automatic ban without first validating against real, normal server traffic.
- Never actually testing the incident response path until a real incident forces it.
