How to Add an AI Chatbot to Discord

How to enable and configure Airwavy's AI Chatbot — channel setup, personalities, memory, vision, and what's free versus Premium.

Quick answer

Enable AI Chatbot in the Airwavy dashboard, choose a channel and a personality, and it starts responding to @mentions or messages in that channel. Free access includes real usage — 15 prompts per member and 300 per server each hour, with a 10-second cooldown. Server Premium and Personal Premium raise those limits, add live web search, and unlock a custom personality.

What you'll learn

  • What to decide before enabling it — channel, community rules
  • How to configure the channel, personality, and Premium custom style
  • What the free-tier limits actually are, and what Premium changes
  • How memory, image understanding, and live web search work in practice
  • How to reset a member's memory, or turn the feature off again

Why a static FAQ channel isn't enough

#

Members ask the same handful of questions repeatedly, staff can't be online around the clock, and a bot with only fixed commands can't handle an open-ended question phrased slightly differently than expected. A conversational assistant that generates a real answer — instead of matching a fixed keyword — covers the gap between "there's a doc for that" and "someone actually has to answer this."

What Discord itself offers

#

Discord doesn't ship a built-in AI conversation feature for servers. Any AI chat experience a server has comes from a bot the server owner chose to add and configure.

How Airwavy's AI Chatbot works

#

It responds when a message starts with an Airwavy mention in any server text channel, or to any message posted in the channel you configure for it — whichever fits your server better.

  • Holds short-term conversation memory — about ten exchanges per member per server — that expires after 30 minutes of inactivity, or can be cleared any time with /resetmemory.
  • Reads attached images: describe one, ask what's in it, or have it read text from a screenshot.
  • Preset personalities include Airwavy, chill, comedian, storyteller, zen, tech, and fitness; eligible Premium servers can provide bounded custom style text instead — it can't override Airwavy's identity or core safety rules.
  • Server Premium and Personal Premium add live web search for current information (news, scores, prices), on by default and capped independently of regular chat limits; replies built from search results are labeled and cite their sources.

@Airwavy can you summarise our last patch notes?

AirwavyAPP23:14

Sure — V2 shipped a rebuilt dashboard, faster moderation actions, and 50% off Premium for the first month. Want the full changelog?

Set it up in a few minutes

#
  1. Add Airwavy to your server if you haven't already.
  2. Open AI Chatbot in the dashboard and enable it.
  3. Choose the dedicated chatbot channel, and post a short rule there about AI use before turning it on for everyone.
  4. Pick a preset personality, or — on eligible Premium servers — provide custom style text.
  5. Save, then test it with a non-sensitive message: start a message with an Airwavy mention, or post directly in the configured channel.
  6. If you have Premium, confirm whether live web search should stay on (it's on by default) in AI Chatbot's settings.

Common mistakes

#
  • Enabling it in a busy general channel with no warning — members get confused by an AI suddenly replying; use a dedicated channel or post clear rules first.
  • Expecting it to remember things long-term — memory is capped at roughly ten exchanges and expires after 30 minutes of inactivity, scoped per member and per server.
  • Sharing secrets or private information with it — prompts and images may be processed by external AI service providers; it isn't private storage.
  • Assuming custom personality text can override its safety rules — it can't; core safety instructions apply regardless of the configured style.

Troubleshooting

#
The chatbot doesn't respond

Confirm AI Chatbot is enabled, the message starts with an Airwavy mention or is posted in the configured channel, and it contains text or an image. Then wait out any displayed cooldown.

I'm hitting the hourly limit

Free access allows 15 prompts per member and 300 per server each hour with a 10-second per-member cooldown. Server Premium raises this to 200 prompts per member and 5,000 per server each hour with a 3-second cooldown.

A reply used outdated information

Premium adds live web search for current information — confirm it's turned on in AI Chatbot's settings. Free-tier answers come from the model's own knowledge only.

I need to clear someone's conversation

Have the member run /resetmemory to clear their current context in that server, or wait for the 30-minute inactivity window to expire it automatically.
