How to Run a Discord Giveaway (Step by Step)

From publishing the entry message to picking a fair winner — how Airwavy's giveaway system handles the whole lifecycle automatically.

Quick answer

Publish a prize, a duration (1 minute to 30 days), and a winner count (1 to 50) — Airwavy handles entry via a button, closes entries automatically at the scheduled time, and selects winners without any manual draw. Free servers get the full entry-and-selection loop; Server Premium adds requirements, bonus entries, weighted rerolls, and a web-based Giveaway Portal.

What you'll learn

  • The full giveaway lifecycle, from publish to winner selection
  • What's free versus what Premium adds
  • How weighted entries and rerolls actually work
  • How to publish clear eligibility rules before you launch
  • Common mistakes that lead to a disputed or confusing giveaway

Why giveaways are a reliable engagement tool

#

A giveaway gives members an immediate, low-effort reason to engage right now, and a visible prize makes the payoff concrete in a way ongoing systems like XP don't. The tricky part isn't running one — it's running one that feels fair, especially once bonus entries or requirements are involved.

What Discord itself offers

#

Discord has no native giveaway feature — a manual giveaway means a staff member posting a message, collecting reactions or replies by hand, and picking a winner themselves, with no independent record of who entered fairly or how the winner was actually chosen.

How Airwavy runs the whole lifecycle

#

The giveaway manager publishes an entry message, accepts button entries, closes automatically at the scheduled time, and selects the configured number of winners — no manual draw required.

  • Runs from 1 minute to 30 days, with 1 through 50 winners; each member's entry is recorded once, with a private confirmation on entry.
  • Server Premium adds a scheduled start delay, role and minimum-level requirements, and up to ten bonus-entry roles worth 1 through 50 additional entries each.
  • Weighted winner selection never repeats a member in the same draw; a reroll prefers members who weren't already selected while preserving the prior result for staff context.
  • The Premium Giveaway Portal gives entrants a web page to view details and enter without Discord — using the exact same eligibility rules as the in-Discord button.

Run one, step by step

#
  1. Open Giveaways in the dashboard and start a new giveaway.
  2. Enter the prize, destination channel, end time, and winner count — review these carefully, since editing an active giveaway is limited.
  3. On Premium: set any role or minimum-level requirement, and configure bonus-entry roles if you want to reward specific members with extra chances.
  4. Publish, and confirm the entry button works with a test account.
  5. Publish clear eligibility rules alongside it — closing time, requirements, bonus-entry rules, and reroll policy — before entries open.

Common mistakes

#
  • Not publishing eligibility rules up front — disputes almost always trace back to something that wasn't stated clearly before entries opened.
  • Deleting the original giveaway message while it's still active — this can prevent it from closing correctly.
  • Setting a minimum-level requirement while leveling is disabled — the requirement is only enforced while leveling is active, and silently stops applying (without cancelling the giveaway) if leveling is later turned off.
  • Forgetting that a reroll checks current eligibility again — a member who's since left the server or lost a required role won't be reselected.

Troubleshooting

#
The giveaway didn't close on time

Check the dashboard's recorded end time and the public status page. Don't delete the original giveaway message while it's active.

I need to reroll a winner

A reroll re-checks current server membership, any required role, and any minimum level before selecting — it prefers eligible members who weren't already selected, and preserves the prior result if nobody is currently eligible.

The Giveaway Portal link isn't showing

It's Premium-only — on a free server the link isn't shown at all, since the page would just reject a visitor with a Premium-required message.
